30 Years after its original release, the Rubik's Cube, the puzzle toy that reminds us of 80s childhoods and things being thrown hard against walls is getting a whole lot of renewed attention. With 350 million frustration cubes sold worldwide, there's suddenly attention on the toy for a bizarre reason. Usually, content to license the design out as a promotional business toy to companies usually selling Branded Merchandise, the word on the street is that the Rubik's cube is about to get its own movie.
Yes, really.
The word from Hollywood is that powerful talent agency CAA has been trying to shift the license to studios. CAA actually have a lot of credability behind them: the represent George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt. Shame the storylines being vomited out of their Branded pens aren't exactly reversing the bad taste the strange license leaves in the mouth: with the prospect of an Erno Rubik biography seeming about as exciting as hairdrying wet paint, current concepts include the uninspired idea of a 'Rubik's cube tournament'. As much as we'd all want to see a Karate Kid-ripoff with a troubled youngster fighting against the unconventional tactics of an underhand Rubik's Dojo (basically, they peel the stickers off), that's probably not going to happen. Oh, and other idea: John Travolta in a dance off on a giant Rubik's cube. Better than Battlefield Earth or your money back..
Rubik's Revenge isn't the first dodgy movie license in the last few years. Rights to pill-popping pie-chart Pac-Man were purchased by Crystal Sky in 2008, though no movie ever actually surfaced. What we're clearly seeing is a Hollywood obsessed with brand, no longer simply content with promotional clothing sales, but selling movies themselves on the name alone.
